Help women in refuges this Christmas with Project Shoebox 2016

So we’re a bit late with this, but the awesome PROJECT SHOEBOX is BACK! Too much stuff in your bathroom cabinet? Project Shoebox is collecting shoeboxes filled with unwanted toiletries to make gift boxes for women in refuges in Cardiff and the South Wales area.

project_shoebox

This is a community project, co-ordinated by the awesome Mali Taylor-Powell. The idea is  women organising themselves to help women on their own doorsteps. Of course boys can join in too 🙂 It’s an attempt to help the women who arrive at Women’s Refuges this Christmas. Many will arrive bruised, battered and with nothing more than the clothes they are standing in.

The first donations are in! Here’s Mali with the first donations!

Project Shoebox collects together unwanted toiletries like shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste and brushes into shoeboxes, and makes them into a gift to get these women started and remind them that people can and do care.

WHAT CAN YOU SEND?
Anything from your bathroom cabinet that’s new or unused. Think basics like toothbrushes, shower gel, shampoo – but also anything nice like cosmetics or face cream is very welcome. This year we will only be accepting unused or new items. There’s a big list of ideas for inspiration further down!

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR DONATION TO PROJECT SHOEBOX?
We will be manning a donation station at the Cardiff University Students’ Union on Park Place, on the 4th floor Room 4E, from the 25th November – Saturday 3rd December.

Opening hours are: 5pm-7.30pm, Monday-Friday and also from 10am-4pm Saturday & Sunday

Please note: This is a voluntary project and I’m afraid there will be nobody to receive your donation outside of these hours**

The address is:
4th floor Room 4E, Cardiff University Students’ Union, Park Place, Cardiff CF10 3QN – again, please please come to donate within the above hours! 🙂

LAST DAY FOR DONATIONS?
Saturday 3rd December so we can sort, box and deliver in time for Christmas.

IDEAS!
You can choose to donate individual items or make your very own shoebox gift. Feel free to get creative but here are some ideas:
*New toothbrushes
*Toothpaste
*Shower Gel
*Flannels/sponges
*Facial wipes

Attention cheese lovers! Cheese Pantry to open in Cardiff Indoor Market, Saturday 26 November

Holy cheeseboard Batman … Penylan Pantry – the award-winning Cardiff delicatessen will be opening a sister location in Cardiff Indoor Market this Saturday. The Cheese Pantry is an exciting new specialist cheese stall in Cardiff Central Market, and I can’t wait to eat my entire daily calorie allowance from it.

penylan_pantry_cheese_2

The Cheese Pantry will offer the largest selection of exceptional British cheeses in South Wales, a bench for lunchtime cheese board customers and a selection of chutneys, crackers and gifts for sale – this will surely become Cardiff’s go-to spot for lovers of all things cheese.

Melissa Boothman, who along with business partner Jolene runs Cardiff deli/cafe Penylan Pantry, is delighted to be setting up shop in the market.

“We are so proud to be here inside such a beautiful historic building that has been at the heart of the city’s food trade for over 120 years and with such a strong sense of community.”

Penylan Pantry was opened in December 2013 by Mel and Jo, wanting to create a place to showcase all the fantastic produce from Wales and the rest of Britain. Their ethos is all about sustainability: low food miles, supporting local producers and therefore the local economy and aiming to maintain a 95 per cent level of recyclable waste.

Penylan Pantry - one of Elliot's choice spots in Cardiff

As a result of their hard work since opening, Penylan Pantry has won a Cardiff Life award for Best Cafe, and been Runner-Up three years in a row in the Observer Food Awards in Wales for Best Ethical Retailer, Best Cheap Eats and Best Independent Retailer.

When asked why she wanted to open a specialist cheese stall in Cardiff, Mel said:

“We are nuts about cheese! The smells, flavours, textures, characteristics, the rich history and varied stories that lie behind each one… did you know there are over 700 cheeses made in Britain?! Each one has its own tale to tell and we’d like to share some of those with you and showcase the absolute best of British cheese.”

penylan_pantry_cheese_1

Cheese fans Melissa and Jolene are joined by cheese expert Owen, who has 14 years’ experience in the artisan cheese market as a buyer for the catering industry, sourcing the best British cheeses directly from the makers and farmers. If those credentials weren’t enough, he has also been a judge at The World and British Cheese Awards. Sounds like a cheese lover’s dream! Safe to say, Owen is a man who knows his Cornish Yarg from his Dorstone and he’ll be the head cheese monger at Cheese Pantry, imparting his knowledge and expertise to all staff. Unsurprisingly, Owen is also excited about the stall opening:

“We want to give Cardiff the very best cheese counter and this understanding of the cheese we sell will absolutely set us apart from any of the supermarkets. Working with the girls from Penylan Pantry is a perfect match, combining their passion for exceptional food, supporting British producers and their love of great cheese.”

“Their passion for cheese shines through and their know-how will be shared with you when you buy, showing customers how to cut, care for, wrap and present each cheese, including many cheeses which cannot be found anywhere else in Cardiff. What better time to head down to the market and pick up some fantastic cheese and top tips on creating the perfect festive cheese board.”

See you guys at Cardiff Indoor Market on Saturday 26 November for the opening, yeah??

Proud Valley showing at Chapter for BFI Black Star Season

You guys! BFI and Film Hub Wales have collaborated on a season called BLACK STAR. It’s the UK’s biggest ever celebration of black screen actors. In Wales, the focus is on a film called The Proud Valley (1940) which was filmed in Rhondda Valley coalfields and it starred American actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson.
The first screening is on 13 November in Chapter.
the-proud-valley-5 the-proud-valley-6
The tour celebrates American actor, bass singer and Civil Rights activist Paul Robeson and the film, The Proud Valley, which was filmed on location in the Rhondda Valley coalfields.
The film tells the story of David Goliath, played by Robeson, who has sailed to Cardiff to find work. On discovering his voice, he joins the local male voice choir, finds work with the Blaendy miners and is is adopted by the community. It was extremely rare for a black character to be presented as kind, generous and good natured in the 1930s and 1940s, when cinema audiences were used to seeing Stepin Fetchit playing the fool in American comedies. The film enabled Robeson to express his socialist beliefs and portray the struggles of Wales’ working class.

The screenings launch with newly remastered material at Chapter Cardiff, on Sunday 13 November and will be accompanied by a performance from Treorchy Male Choir. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, exploring Robeson’s impact on Welsh life, politics, and BAME communities.

Gifts for homeless people in Cardiff: Christmas 2016 edition

We’ve already had a couple of you eager and generous beavers messaging us on our We Are Cardiff Facebook page, wanting to know how you can help the less fortunate this Christmas.

Photo by Ben Blyth Photography, from his Behind the Streets project
Photo by Ben Blyth Photography, from his Behind the Streets project

Well, I haven’t heard anything from Project Shoebox yet, but I did come across this project: South Wales gifts for the homeless, which is putting together gift bags for homeless and vulnerable people. Last year they raised £700 and created 1000 bags, but this year they want to smash their target and raise enough to put together 2000 bags. They’re asking for donations of items to go in gift bags, but also looking for money to  buy food vouchers.

homeless_care_package

List of possible things to donate:

  • Umbrellas
  • Water
  • Toilet paper
  • Socks
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Blankets
  • Raincoats
  • Gloves
  • Sleeping bags
  • Women’s sanitary products
  • Wet wipes
  • Dog food
  • Tooth brush
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Dental floss
  • Scarves
  • Hats
  • Shoes
  • Jumpers
  • Deodorant
  • Hair brush
  • Lip balm
  • Back packs
  • Razors
  • Needles and thread
  • Pens and paper
  • Nail cutters
  • Snacks bars
  • First aid stuff
  • Gift cards
  • Watches
  • Cinema tickets
  • Tents
  • Thick socks
  • Emergency blankets (the thin silver kind)

Please note: they are not accepting any baby or children’s items.

Currently the group has drop off points in: Bargoed, Bridgend, Cardiff, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Talbot Green, Treorchy and Abertillery.

If anyone is interested in volunteering or co-ordinating a drop-off point, please visit the Homeless gifts Facebook group which has been set up for discussion, and message organiser Katie (she’s going to need all the help she can get sorting out the donations!)

South Wales gifts for homeless people Facebook event page

We have a number of charities in and around Cardiff that help homeless and vulnerable people all year round. Learn about their work and how you can help:

Also, just a final word: over the past week I’ve stopped for a chat with two homeless guys on the street. One served in Iraq, the other had been an addict most of his life and kept losing any housing he was assigned to. It was humbling and made me feel like a total piece of crap for all the vulnerable people on the street asking for help I don’t stop to talk to.

I get that modern life is busy and everyone is in a rush to get to where they’re going, but stopping for a chat and buying someone a cup of tea doesn’t take much out of your day. It’s freaking cold out there, guys.

Super secret giant guerilla cross-stitch street art is landing in Cardiff…. intrigued?!

Oh, this is very exciting! With needles, thread and grand ambitions at their disposal, cross-stitchers of Cardiff have been plotting a super secret street art project that they plan to unleash at this year’s Made In Roath arts festival……

picture1

Whether you are cross stitch crazy, mad about the arts or just looking for something different at the Made In Roath week, look no further! All kinds of cross stitch lovers from the local community have been working hard behind-the-scenes to bring a new and exciting project to the streets called Crossing Paths.

The Crossing Paths team have been meeting regularly in secret, in order to create a series of giant cross stitch street art that will appear overnight just in time for Made In Roath Festival.

As Becca Clark at Green City Events explains:

“We had no idea that so many people wanted to create street art and it seems we have found a really accessible and unique medium – giant cross stitch! Plus, I think the secretive, guerrilla style group was a factor!”

Every piece has been made by a member of the community using different recycled materials such as t-shirts, tights, naturally dyed sheets and even old bicycle wheels. The aim of the project is to bring colour and art to the streets of Roath and Adamsdown using the resources within the community. It aims to create awareness of the beautiful community gardens in the area that can sadly be overlooked at times.

People from all different backgrounds and parts of Cardiff have joined forces and contributed their own personal pieces of art. Ten year-old Osian Allsopp explains why he wanted to get involved:

“I wanted to learn a new way of sewing and I had good fun experimenting. I can’t wait to tell people; I’ve been very good at keeping this a secret!”.

On Saturday 8th October, everyone involved in the project will come together to cross-stitch ‘bomb’ the Plasnewydd and Adamsdown community gardens and surrounding streets. There will be an array of designs that all relate to what you may find in a garden; plants, wildlife, garden tools and maybe even a Pokémon or two!

The guerilla stitchers tell us more:

How did the Crossing Paths project idea originally begin?

“After a trip to Valencia where the streets were just bursting with colourful art I thought it would be fun to brighten up our own streets back home. A couple of weeks and a sneaky Facebook group later we had gathered a group of keen cross stitchers to make our dreams a reality!” – Becca Clark, Green City Events.

What do you hope to achieve from this project?

“We hope that people stumble across our unique pieces of street art during Made in Roath and maybe see a part of their everyday surroundings in a new light. For those keen to see them all, you’ll find a map on the Green City Events website, you can follow the path of plants and wildlife and in turn discover three beautiful community gardens. We hope this is just the start of a new community project and that others are inspired to create random acts of art!”

What do the crossing paths team think of the giant cross stitch street art?

“The perception of cross-stitch needs to taken out of the parlour and onto the streets; nothing like a bit of subversiveness to challenge the every-day!” – Dorcas Frazer

“As a prolific stitcher, I was thrilled to be part of Crossing Paths. Not only was it a great opportunity to meet other Cardiff Creative types it was so much fun stitching up giant cross stitches” – Charlotte,Twin Made

Why will Crossing Paths be a great addition to the Made In Roath week?

“The made in roath festival is all about bringing art out into the community, be that in schools, on street corners, in community gardens, and anywhere else we can find. CDF Cross Stitchers & Green City Events have done just that, with the unexpected element of stumbling upon their work whilst we wander the streets we think we know so well. We can’t wait to discover what’s on our doorstep!”

Running real fast … Cardiff half marathon 2016!

What an incredible day for a half marathon! The weather is banging, and record numbers of you turned out today to run the Cardiff Half Marathon, which is one of the flattest and fastest in the UK.

Congratulations to everyone that took part!

cardiff_half_marathon_chloe_jackson_nott-01 cardiff_half_marathon_chloe_jackson_nott-02 cardiff_half_marathon_chloe_jackson_nott-03 cardiff_half_marathon_chloe_jackson_nott-04

People who have run the race before will be familiar with the mountains of water bottles strewn across the streets, but this year’s race was one of the greenest yet with more recycling bins than ever before, more signs, and for the first time an army of environmental champions there to help people recycle properly and make sure the maximum amount of materials are recycled. Brecon Carreg’s water bottles are also smaller for the first time (which is a brilliant move – it’s not easy to chug down that much water on mile ten!).

In terms of the impact of recycling at the event, according to Recycle for Wales, if every Cardiff Half runner recycled one 500ml water bottle, enough energy could be saved to power these famous Cardiff Half route landmarks:

  • Power the Principality Stadium’s floodlights for three years
  • Operate the Cardiff Bay barrage for 48 hours
  • Provide the Millennium Centre with electricity for nine hours
  • Make sure Cardiff Castle stays regal, and keeps its electricity going for 55 hours.

Although the best bet is always to bring your own reusable water bottle, the plastic bottles that are recycled on the day will be transformed into a number of different products (including clothing – as well as new bottles!). The peels from the bananas handed out to runners at the end of the race can be used to generate energy, which could charge a range of household items. FACT: just one banana peel can create enough electricity to fully charge two smartphones. Where’s my banana charger?

Cardiff Uni put together this awesome little video of things to look out for while running around the city

The numbers of runners turning out today wasn’t the only record thing about the race. Kenyan runner Shadrick Korir set a new Cardiff Half record in his first run ever outside Kenya (finishing the race in an eye watering 1’00’54!!). Viola Jebchumbah won the women’s race with a new record of 1’08’14, and there was even a new Guinness World Record set today!

Yes, that’s right – Batman and Robin stormed the course in under 71 minutes, to set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest half marathon run in fancy dress. Yes, there’s a record for that!

Well done to ALL who participated in today’s run. Remember, there are only three kinds of winners: those who start the race, those that finish, and whoever happens to come first. You’re all winners to us!

Now go celebrate with a pint and get those feet in some ice, yes?

We Make Good Happen: help a closing foodbank

Okay, so we don’t often bother mentioning anything about Swansea on this blog (specifically not things like the Mumbles, the Gower, the fact they have the largest indoor market in Wales or that they’ve just been named top university in Wales). It’s not like we’re jealous or anything. Honestly.

However … sometimes it’s good to reach out and help your neighbours, so we’re featuring We Make Good Happen, a local pay-it-forwards-good-deeds type initiative set up by Matt and Andrea Callanan. They are trying to round up as many donations as they can to help the soon-to-close Eastside food bank in Swansea.

They will be driving to Swansea from Cardiff on Friday 7 October to take donations. If you’re in a position to donate anything, please have a look at the list of needed items below. There are a variety of ways you can get items to We Make Good Happen, also listed.

Rather than rewriting the whole thing, I’ll just copy and paste Matt’s initial plea, but for info this is being run by We Make Good Happen, not We Are Cardiff (though we are going to be donating, and if any of you can’t access any of the points below, let Matt or us know and we’ll try our best to arrange someone to pick stuff up from you).

**URGENT** **UPDATED DROP OFF POINTS **

Can you help me to a great thing? A #foodbank in #Swansea is on its last legs and needs donations urgently otherwise they will have to close. (feel free to share this post)

From one of the ladies that runs it:

“Really need more donations or we will end up closing. We are feeding more families than ever so the need is there but our donors seem to have abandoned us.”

I will be driving down from #Cardiff next week on Friday 7th October and it would be amazing if I can drive down with a car packed full of food for people that desperately need it. (I’ll sort a van if there’s enough stuff)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
**UPDATE – 2 drop points in Cardiff Bay
+ Have now set up a box in my office reception so they are expecting people: Saint Line House, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5LR (oppSunflower&I )

or Inspire Me / Sing and Inspire InspireMe
Crichton House, 11-12 Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff CF10 5EE

For Roath email me: wemakegoodhappen@gmail.com

Also popped to supermarket and bought a few cans/things to get this thing kickstarted.

I will be going out to buy food but it would be great if other people can contribute (even if it’s a few cans) and really help families and people in need. Food is such a basic thing! So imagine being without it. Or kids being without food. Think of the good you will do.

If you want to get involved let me know here or email wemakegoodhappen@gmail.com

I’m happy for you to drop off at my house/ my office in Cardiff Bay or I can pickup from you

Food they need: (**Check food is in date & they do not need pasta**)

“Own brand & value things are perfectly acceptable. Clients who are hungry are pleased with anything.”

milk (dried or long life)
tinned meat (corned beef/ham/pork/braised beef/meatballs/hot dogs)
tinned fruit
tinned veg
Baked beans / spaghetti
Tinned or packet soup
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned or packet dried potatoes
Tinned carrots, peas, sweetcorn
Juice
Tea / coffee
Instant hot chocolate
Tuna / sardines
Savoury / sweet biscuits / part baked long life bread
Savoury and sweet spreads

“Many thanks in advance for help.”

This is We Make Good Happen by the way. Adorable, right??
