The Escape Rooms Cardiff

We sent roving reporter Ellie Philpotts to the launch of The Escape Rooms Cardiff. Here’s what went on!

escape rooms cardiff

Geek chic is pretty celebrated in popular culture these days. Nerds worldwide can rejoice as science fiction, tech and gaming is now officially worth shouting about, not hiding away. And now, the tribe of geeks who double up as Cardiff residents can put their passions into action, with the brand new Escape Rooms Cardiff.

If you don’t yet know what the Escape Rooms are, I’ll try to set the scene. Basically, they’re a real-life escape game in which two to five players work together to find hidden clues and solve mysteries in order to escape a themed room within an hour. There are plenty of nooks and crannies, all of which could potentially hold the key to unravelling the puzzle. Forward-thinking and teamwork are the ingredients to success. (Admittedly, I wouldn’t know. I definitely needed a little help.)

They make a welcome addition to the city’s ever-growing entertainment scene. Sure, the abundance of bars, cafes, shopping centres, restaurants and art galleries here aren’t exactly boring, but sometimes we all need somewhere to release our inner techie.

With this in mind, I eagerly trotted off to their Media Launch Party. Having grandly opened their doors to the public the previous Friday, following months of preparation, they’d been fully booked, so I was expecting big things.

And it definitely delivered! I might as well throw a disclaimer in here – I am definitely not techy. Uploading We Are Cardiff articles to the site is just about as much as I can manage. But yep, even I enjoyed the evening and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

The entire thing is shrouded in mystery, before you even start the gaming. The Escape Rooms aren’t immediately obvious – they’re on the second and third floors of 119 St Mary Street in the city centre, and I did manage to walk past it a few times. I don’t want to give too much about the games themselves away, but here’s one non-so-subtle hint I think is justified: they’re above Costa.

The layout is split into three rooms – The Tomb; Finding Sherlock; and The Heist. If you’re a novice or a Cumberbitch, it’d make sense to start off in Finding Sherlock. Described as ‘the private office of the world famous Sherlock Holmes,’ it’s where it’s up to you to solve the clues he’s left for Dr Watson – since he’s conveniently gone missing himself. I’ve got to say it definitely looked the part. It seems three’s definitely not a crowd here – this one’s ranked 3/5 in terms of difficulty, with 3 also the best team size.

If you’ve proven to the world that you’re not going to remain Sher-locked in, it may be time to try your hand at something a tad more challenging. In The Tomb, make like Howard Carter and unscramble the ancient-themed puzzles, featuring realistic décor like a pharaoh and mummy in all their glory. If you’re feeling extra ambitious or just plain smug, The Heist is the place to be. Here, you and ideally four others adopt the role of bad, bad people who’ve broken into a museum to steal the collector priceless diamond. Working best if you split into a two and a three, you’ll have to sneak the goods out – but the laser trap in the vault is there to mix things up. Side note – if you’re arty, which seems to apply to many a Cardiff resident – you’ll appreciate the designs in themselves, from Mona Lisa and The Scream, to less iconic but equally aesthetically-pleasing others.

My favourite was Finding Sherlock, and yep I’ll confess the comparative easiness had something to do with it! It still got me thinking though, but I did manage to ask the faces behind the idea some of my burning questions.

The managers Calum Jones and John Lugsdin previously worked together in the field of finance. Which is all good. But even the keenest of mortgagers could hardly deny that gaming is just so much more fun. They agreed. So, they went careering into a new career direction, in setting up Cardiff’s first Escape Rooms. The building had remained derelict for the past 18 months, so they’d found the ideal venue to get to contributing to our city centre’s changing face.

As with every capital city, Cardiff is home to a vast range of people, but I’m sure they’d all come away from Escape Rooms Cardiff satisfied. Whether you’re a student; family; group of friends; or on the hunt for a quirky date venue, you’re bound to have found it here. It’s also perfect as an after-work alternative for a bit of team bonding. John told me a corporate group drove down all the way from Pembrokeshire to be the first to trial it out!

Calum’s looking to expand the Rooms, and keeping an ace up his sleeve, he has big plans for the fourth space. Judging by the Escape Rooms Cardiff’s recent successes – it’s appealing to mystery lovers far and wide throughout South Wales, with 100 players at January’s local Comic Can taking up six-minute versions of the challenges, many pros becoming victorious in just half the allowed time; and they’ll also be back at Cardiff Comic Con in March, Swansea’s Comic Con in May and Newport’s Geekedfest this August – I’m sure this will pay off.

Interested? Check it out – prices start at £17 per player in a team of five. You won’t be disappointed!

Monday 8 Feb – Creative Cardiff Show and Tell

Creative Cardiff’s Show and Tell is a quarterly event that gives a platform to some of the exciting range of creative people and projects in the city. It will bring together Cardiff’s creative community, from emerging talent to old hand, to hear about their current projects and ambitions.

Each of the speakers will give a 10 minute lightening talk. And they’ll bring an object. The object might be the source of their inspiration, a tool of their trade or a comfort blanket. The speakers will share their work and explain the importance of the object they’ve brought along.

Speakers:

Anton Faulconbridge: Anton has worked in creative and interactive media since 1994, specialising in the development and delivery of multi-platform creative software products.

Claire Hill: Claire fell in love with making jewellery after taking an evening class and discovering the zen-like qualities of making after long days working as a director/producer in factual television. She’s also a co-founder of Dirty Protest Theatre and also co-runs the Push:Auto network for people who work across all aspects of broadcasting in Wales.

John Rostron: John is a key figure in Cardiff’s music scene, founding both the Sŵn festival and the Welsh Music Prize. John promotes live music in Cardiff through his company Sound Nation and is the current Vice-Chair of the Association of Independent Festivals.

But there’s a catch and the bottle demands a payment…

This evening of magic and enchantment, with a touch of Tales of the Unexpected, will keep you guessing, and leave you thinking ‘be careful what you wish for’.

What’s on

1 – 20 Feb: Henry VI

Following the success of last year’s all-female production of Richard III, Wales Millennium Centre are collaborating with Omidaze (Oh My Days!) once more; this time on an all-female production of Shakespeare’s Henry VI (The Wars of the Roses).

Exploring notions of power, leadership and trust, director Yvonne Murphy’s new production abridges the three classic history plays into one hard-hitting instalment, focussing on the personal journey of Henry’s rise to power.

Performed in the Centre’s roof void, this usually unseen part of the building will be transformed into an immersive performance space, offering an opportunity to see the Centre from a new perspective. With an inspired soundtrack, aerial circus, original costumes and imaginative set designs, audiences can expect a captivating and fully immersive experience as they are guided around the space, following the action as it takes place around them. Henry VI Tickets £12: Age Guidance: 9+ (No Under 2s)

Saturday 6 Feb – SAVE OUR ARTS! CARDIFF MARCH FOR CULTURE!

cardiffwithoutculture

Arts and culture are facing a potential funding crisis and we would like to raise our voice.

Culture makes life worth living. And Cardiff a city worth living in. Cardiff Council want to cut £700,000 from the arts budget. Which threatens the future of culture in the city.

As Europe’s youngest capital city, Cardiff enjoys national arts organisations and institutions including two symphony orchestras, the National Museum, the Welsh National Opera, Wales Millennium Centre, National Theatre Wales, National Dance Company Wales, St David’s Hall; and high profile events such as Artes Mundi, Cardiff Singer of the World, and Cardiff Contemporary. Not to mention countless grassroots and community arts projects.

This kind of activity keeps the city alive, and demonstrates how much it values creativity. It provides rich ground for new ideas and innovation, grassroots engagement and renewal. This is what attracts both people and investment. Where would a city be without this?

Our burgeoning reputation for arts and culture, built over many years, impacts on education, social services, employment, community cohesion, criminal justice, tourism, refugee agencies, youth services, the third age, library services and more.

Culture is all around us from the moment we wake to the moment we sleep. If the next generation of designers, makers, musicians, artists, writers, actors, dancers are placed in an environment that does not encourage them, what kind of Cardiff will we live in? Wales prides itself on its cultural heritage. We need to ensure that our future heritage is as strong.

Join us on Saturday 6th outside the National Museum to call upon the Council to cancel arts cuts and to celebrate Cardiff WITH culture. Bring your banners, signs, instruments, energy. We will end outside the Central Library.

Meet 14.00 outside the National Museum, Cathays Park  |  March for Culture Facebook page

From a very young age Kitty, Daisy and Lewis’ performances have been blowing away and inspiring audiences, building up an impressive fan base from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Chris Martin and Eagles Of Death Metal to Dustin Hoffman and Ewan McGregor. Are you affected by the Cardiff local development plan? As a resident of Butetown, I personally cannot WAIT for more flats to be built down here. If that’s something we’re short of, it’s flats. Amirite? As Cardiff gets the go-ahead for thousands of new homes, what will the Local Development Plan actually mean for the city? (Wales Online)

Also the NosDa hostel and car opposite the Millennium Stadium has made a wee video, with some nice footage taken around Cardiff

And, what else could I sign off with, but the fat squirrels spotted in Bute Park? Apparently the mild winter has meant the greedy little buggers have just eaten and eaten and eaten, but it hasn’t been cold enough for them to hibernate. Climate change has a lot to answer for …

Also, if you’re looking to increase your book collection and improve your mind with reading this new year, may I recommend the debut publication from We Are Cardiff Press, an anthology of short stories about a bus route around Cardiff? The book is called The 42b – Dark journeys in Cardiff, and would make the perfect treat yo’self gift! Buy The 42b here.

Creative Cardiff: a new network for the city’s creative economy…and a Christmas party!

If you’re creative and are based in Cardiff, it makes ALL THE SENSE to join the wonderful new Creative Cardiff network. Plus, they’re having a Christmas party on Wednesday 16 December in Chapter – go along and get involved! Here they are to tell us more about it.

Christmas party flyer

Over the last year we’ve been working to build a new city-wide network that connects people working in any creative organisation, business or job. You may have been to our freelancers’ breakfast, to our event at The Abacus, or have met with one of our team to share your thoughts about what this should or could be.

And now we’ve launched Creative Cardiff – a network which provides information and promotes new opportunities as well as enabling its members to find new people to work with, build their audience and promote their work. There’s already lots going on in Cardiff and there are many creative networks but, unlike other cities such as Edinburgh, Bath and Dundee we didn’t have something here which pulls it all together in one place and encourages people to work together across all the different creative sectors. We believe that by playing this connector role Creative Cardiff can help to make our city the most creative place it can be.

Over the first year we’re offering a programme of ‘52 Things’ which we want to make with and for the city’s creative community. Online we’re profiling the people and places in the city which give it a unique identity (look out for our forthcoming city guide which we’ve worked on with ‘We Are Cardiff’ and ‘I Loves the Diff’). And we’re running events – so far we’ve held a ‘Show & Tell’ event where people shared their work, we’ve had an ‘In conversation’ event with Dick Penny from Bristol’s Watershed and later this month we’re having a Christmas party

Come and join us at Chapter for a Christmas party for the creative community on Wednesday 16 December from 7:30-11:30pm. We’ll have music from DJs, GRLTLK, and live performances. And we’ll have a few surprises up our sleeves too! Celebrate the work you’ve done in 2015 and you might even meet some new people to collaborate with next year. Tickets are just £10 and include a glass of mulled wine and a hot buffet. Buy tickets.

Creative Cardiff is free to join. You’ll receive our fortnightly newsletter, invitations to our events and the opportunity to list yourself on our members’ directory. To find out more about the network and join for FREE visit: www.creativecardiff.org.uk
Creative Cardiff is run by Cardiff University with support from BBC Wales, the City of Cardiff Council and Wales Millennium Centre.

Have a mezze Christmas with Meat and Greek!

We popped along to the Meat and Greek pop-up restaurant in the Corys building on the corner of Bute Street last night. It was super special for a couple of reasons….

6

The building is grade II listed, and was built in 1889 for the Corys Brothers & Co. The business included ship’s chandlery, brokerage and the sale and export of coal. Ever since I’ve lived in Cardiff, this building has been boarded up, seemingly derelict.

4 5

The ever-wonderful Meat and Greek, who are a local Greek Cypriot family, have lovingly painted and cleaned the lobby of the building, and built an absolutely gorgeous inside garden, made of wood and pallets and fairy lights. This is not your usual thrown-together pop-up. They must have spent days and days making this place look so beautiful.

21

The second reason it’s such a wonderful experience is the food! The menu is tastefully short – offering one starter, two platters (one meat, one veggie) and one dessert. Platters comes with decent sized portions of pork, beef, halloumi, stuffed peppers, Greek salad, potatoes, aubergines, spanakopita (a savoury pastry), hummus and tzatziki….

The service is fast, everything is reasonably priced, and the staff are incredible. It’s only open for the first three weekends in December, so don’t miss out on this extra special pop-up!

There’s more info on their Facebook page.

Celebrating the Casablanca Club – CasaB, WMC 2015

Photographer Lorna Cabble headed to the Wales Millennium Centre to catch Casa B-Side – an event celebrating the history of Cardiff’s Casablanca club. Local artists came together for a night of performance covering the rich musical heritage of Tiger Bay, in jazz, funk, hip hop and reggae.

Performing were Li Harding with the Gary Phillips Trio, Afro Cluster, Entaya, Messiah Dub Club, and Roots and Branches.

LCabble_Casa_3

Club regular Keith Murrell reminisced about the club:

“The Casa’s ‘golden years’ began during the 1970s, when High Society Sound System took up residency at the club. Society had come to Cardiff from Ladbroke Grove and the custom-made equipment was a cut above any other local music set-ups at the time. They played mostly new reggae music, including pre-release and dub plate mixes that nobody else was playing.

“Club regulars were mostly our own friends and contemporaries with similar musical tastes. We created our own ‘scene’ from this, which further established the Casa B as an alternative venue for many others from around the city and beyond.”

The roots of rock … Peter Finch goes from Cardiff to Mississippi and back

The lovely Peter Finch has written a book called (you’ve guessed it) The roots of rock – from Cardiff to Mississipi and back. And to celebrate, there’s a launch party!

roots of rock

Peter’s book draws on a life long love of music and the need to trace its roots … he explains the book way more eloquently than I could ever dream of, so I’ll just let him tell you what it’s about:

“I want to find out where the material I listened to as a young man and which became the backdrop to my life came from. I want to discover where it lived. How it was. How it is. How it got there. I want to find out on the ground how the blues, hillbilly, old time dance music, bluegrass, Hank Williams country and western, rockabilly,  Nashville slick and straight ahead Rocket 88 rock and roll came about. What were the components of these musics? How did they cross the Atlantic? What parts came from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales?”

“Most importantly I want to discover how the magic all this became made the transition back to rain drenched Wales. How did it flow across the Bay of Tigers to manifest itself in the bright blue drape jackets of Valley’s born Teddy Boys?  How did it appear amid the banjos plucked in folk clubs in pub back rooms on the Welsh Capital’s Broadway and Charles Street?”

How did it rock in the dance halls of Sophia Gardens, Cowbridge Road and Death Junction? And, in particular, how did it inform the taste of more than one Welsh generation? Mike Harries, Man, the Sons of Adam, Amen Corner, The Sun Also Rises, Edward H, Meic Stevens, the Manic Street Preachers, Cate Le Bon, Richard James, Georgia Ruth, Gruff Rhys,  Trampolene, Baby Queens, Climbing Trees, and Euros Childs.

The book starts in south Wales, in the place I come from. The Cardiff delta.  The flood plain made by the three city rivers – the Ely, the Taff, the Rumney – aided ably by the Roath Brook, the Nant, and that long lost waterway, the Tan. Cardiff is not the centre of the music universe by any means but it has had its moments.  Bill Haley came here in 1957 and played the Cardiff Capitol. Lynyrd Skynyrd did the same thing in 1975. John Lee Hooker was here in 1964 at a surf club on the Wentloog flatlands. Jerry Lee played  Sophia Gardens in 1962. Dion wandered to the Capitol in 1964. Chuck Berry duck walked there a year later. Johnny Cash visited in 1966. Elvis never. How and why? I want to know.

So there you go! I can’t wait to read it.

See you at the party?

The Roots Of Rock From Cardiff To Mississippi And Back  by Peter Finch will be published by Seren Books on 7 December, 2015. There’ll be a paperback at £9.99 and a e-book at the same price. You can order your copy from Seren Books.

Social Action Lightning Talks – Women Making a Difference and Urbanistas united!

Urbanistas Cardiff and Women Making a Difference have teamed up to bring you a Christmas treat on Tuesday 8 December!

social_action_lightning_talks

Join them for a series of ‘lightning talks’ – 20 images for 400 seconds – that focus on projects run by women making their community and world a better place.

Lightning Talks, The Old Library – Tuesday 8 December 2015: 17.30 –  19.30

Lightning Talks – Tickets via Eventbrite

What is a ‘lightning talk’? It’s a short, sharp and exciting way to tell a visual story. We’ve all sat through presentations that drone on and on – this keeps speakers on their toes and grabs your attention. These talks will focus on people taking action to make society a better place.

Do you have a ‘lightning talk’ in you? We bet you do. If you’ve been working on a project of campaign that’s working to make Wales a better place, get 20 images together and tell us your story.  Get in touch with Jo@sartorilab.org or joni@wmad.org.uk to pitch your talk for the night. Don’t be shy! The deadline for pitches is 24 Nov.

Why should you come? They are a friendly bunch. And they aren’t all women! Anyone is welcome. In fact, they will be hosting six visitors from around the world who are spending a few days in Cardiff as part of British Council’s Active Citizens programme run by Women Making a Difference.

And you want another reason? A glass of wine on arrival! At this special Christmas treat, we’ll be offering a tipple to quench your thirst and raise the holiday spirit a notch. For those who prefer something non alcoholic, we’ll have some delicious orange juice and water.

What happens after 19.30? In Urbanistas Cardiff style, they’ll make their way to a local bar to continue with the good cheer and celebrate the holidays.

Can’t make it, but want to keep in touch?

Urbanistas Cardiff meet monthly. Find out when the next Urbanistas event will be held by signing up to the mailing list.

Urbanistas Cardiff is a network of women who are passionate about growing women’s leadership and capacity to start their own projects and ideas, which help make everyday life in cities better for everyone. Their  motto is “start by starting” and is about empowering people to not wait for permission to have a good idea or motivation for doing something positive – sometimes you just need to say your idea out loud in a room full of enthusiastic and collaborative people. Urbanistas gives their members that space.

Women Making a Difference organise training courses and a mentoring programme to empower women to take on roles in public life. Find out when the next training course or opportunity is by signing up to the mailing list.

Women Making a Difference is registered charity that works to bring equality to public life by empowering more women to take on decision-making roles. They work with women from all walks of life, predominantly through training and mentoring. Think we should try something new? Fill out our survey and tell us what you want.

Spaces are limited. If you book a place and cannot attend, please cancel your order.

Please pass this event on to any other contacts in your network who you think this would appeal to.
