Live review: The Stylistics, New Theatre, Cardiff, 12 November 2024

The Stylistics brought their timeless soulful charm to the New Theatre on 12 November as part of their Greatest Hits Tour. The iconic Philly Soul group – who have been through a number of line-up changes during their 56 years of performing – delivered a glorious evening of greatest hits and plenty of nostalgia.

It was evident from the average age of the crowd that I was a couple of decades too young to be a real Stylistics fan (almost everyone else there that I spotted who were under the age of 50 seemed to be accompanying parents or grandparents). And it’s true – I only discovered Philly Soul at all during an extended virtual YouTube crate dig during lockdown. The lush string arrangements and comforting harmonies were a real balm for me during lockdown (which already feels like a lifetime ago). While I might not have been harking back to discos in the 1970s, seeing the Stylistics live was still a bit of a nostalgic experience for me.

Before we get to the band, I want to mention the support act – an “El-Tom John project” fronted by Tom Cridland. Tom apparently learned to play the piano during lockdown, specifically to play Elton John songs and tour them around the world. He’s also the presenter of The Greatest Music of All Time podcast (and fashion designer with his own sustainable fashion label?). He’s unfathomably tall and wearing a suit covered in sparkly stars, and warms the crowd playing a series of early Elton classics on a keyboard.

My 70 year old mother (who is my date for this outing) comments, rather unkindly, I think, “don’t give up the day job”. But she’s lucky enough to have enjoyed Elton as a performer throughout her whole life (I really only got him from the second outing of Candle in the Wind onwards). I still don’t like Candle in the Wind, but I do listen to Tiny Dancer on repeat for the whole of the next day.

Then it’s time for the main event. Advertised as a Greatest Hits Tour, the group doesn’t disappoint, with a show packed full of “old school disco bangers”, as the lady from Ebbw Vale sat behind me calls them.

Formed of two members of the original line up (Airrion Love and Herb Murrell) and two “newer” members (Bo Henderson and Jason Sharp), the group shoops, boops, and sways gently through 85 minutes of classics. Their choreographed dance moves are impeccably timed (although having been performing as a band for 56 years, you’d hope they’d have got the timings down for these). They bring the house down with You Are Everything, along with other classics I’m Stone In Love With You and Can’t Give You Anything (But My Love) (which was a hit single in the UK back in 1975).

My personal favourite is Betcha by Golly Wow, which follows a little preamble with the band talking about how long they’ve been performing and touring, and how old they are now (and how, with the help of “that little blue pill”, everything still works – just not the way it did when they were 50. There are screams and whoops of laughter and delight that ring around the venue, as you might imagine).

Even with the two original members performing at the ripe age of 75, the band are still oozing charisma and charm (and can we talk about the vocals? It’s like having double cream poured into your ears). I’m guessing the dance moves are probably a little less enthusiastic than they were 40 years ago, but they’re still delivered with style. By the end of the show, pretty much the entire crowd is on their feet, clicking their fingers, clapping, swaying, and singing along. It’s a feel-good show that proves The Stylistics are still one of the greatest soul groups of all time. For soul fans of all ages, if you get the chance to catch them on tour, I recommend it.

We got the party started at P!NK’s SUMMER CARNIVAL in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium

Words: Chloe Jackson-Nott
Photography: High Fives & Stage Dives

Flying, bungee jumping, free falling and so much more at P!nk’s Summer Carnival! It’s a huge understatement to say the party started in Principality Stadium; the greatest show on earth began!

Kicking off the show as support acts were KidCutUp, Gayle and The Script. KidCutUp warmed up the crowd in between sets, Gayle rocked the stage in her Cymru bucket hat and scarf, and The Script made sure the crowd were ‘still alive but barely breathing!’

We knew before the show started that we were in for a treat, but from the first song P!nk really showed us how the night was going to continue. When she sang ‘I’m coming up, so you better get this party started;’’ that was not a lie. At the top of the stage, towards the roof, standing proudly singing was P!nk herself! And what an entrance she made. She threw herself off the top and bungee jumped down completing acrobatic tricks on the way whilst STILL singing.

The entire show was filled with fun. There were segway flamingos, hanging bunches of bananas, palm tree, fireworks, flames… you name it, we saw it! We even saw two couples get engaged during her set, which was absolutely adorable to witness.

Just coming up to the halfway point, P!nk started singing Cover Me In Sunshine before her 13-year old, Willow, walked out onto stage and joined her. The bravery and courage of Willow to perform in front of a stadium filled with fans at such a young age was commendable, and Willow probably had the biggest cheer of the night.

P!nk introduced a cover of What’s Up? by saying that she was once arrested for disturbing the peace by singing it when she was younger. The entire stadium definitely disturbed the peace with this song too and bystanders around Cardiff outside could probably hear every lyric as clear as day.

I’d like to take a moment to give P!nk a huge pat on the back for introducing every single person on stage individually and making sure they had their moment to shine. She introduced and named every band member, every back-up singer and every dancer and made it known that she was friends with the most talented people on the planet. A lot of bands and artists don’t take the time to give the other creatives on stage a platform and the fact that P!nk used a couple of songs to hype each one up, was fantastic to see.

Ending her set with So What! came with the most anticipated moment of the night. She flew! Strapped into a harness, P!nk was raised up into the air and launched around the stadium making sure every single fan in that venue got a chance to see her. It was so surreal that she looked like a doll being flown around!

It was an absolute pleasure to experience P!nk’s Summer Carnival and we’re so glad that she started the tour off in Cardiff!

New endeavour in Cardiff: Tracer Booking Agency – meet the team!

Here at We Are Cardiff, we love hearing about new businesses and ventures thriving. Tracer Booking Agency are newly in town, and we had the chance to speak to the founder. Read on!

Introduce yourself

Hi, I’m Rich, a music promoter, musician and freelance venue representative from Birmingham, living in Cardiff.

I’ve been in the music industry for around 15 years as a musician, promoter, and fan. I am the guitarist in Cardiff based Hyper-Fuzz band Death Cult Electric, and previous ticketing manager for Orchard Live, as well as working freelance for Sŵn Festival on multiple occasions.

What was your motivation to start this new venture?

I’d been out of the promoting world since January 2023, where I was running Tone Deaf Creatures promotions (along with my business partner Ethan John who now runs HMG promotions. Shout out to Ethan!) and I felt now was the time to get myself back into doing what I love, bringing my favourite bands to Cardiff and try to run the best events I can.

I was working for Orchard Live, working on the biggest and best events Wales had to offer. These included Queens Of The Stone Age and Bryan Adams in Cardiff Castle throughout 2022/23 and I’d learned a lot from my time there from everyone I came in contact with. I felt I needed to put all of this into a project of my own.

Why did you choose the name ‘Tracer Booking Agency‘?

The name had been on my mind for a while, but had recently changed its meaning. The name represents tracing over everything I have done and learned in my 15 years of being in the music industry. Start with all of that expertise and skills I have picked up and then build a bigger picture from there.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

I have actually ‘Hassled the Hoff’ in a very bizarre situation including an angry taxi driver and a card company awards ceremony. That’s all you’re getting on that!

Any future plans for expansion?

I intend to move into artist management once I have a few more shows under my belt as Tracer Bookings, but I am always happy to offer advice to any musician or artist who needs it.

We will be expanding the team also, looking to bring in another person who has a passion for booking artists on tours and big support slots. Watch this space!

Any exciting upcoming gigs?

I’m super excited to be bringing one of my favourite bands, and good friends of mine, JOHNNY FOREIGNER to Clwb Ifor Bach on 12th June. Support comes from Cardiff favourites MY NAME IS IAN and Math-Pop newcomers GOOD THINGS (featuring members of SAMOANS, ROUGH MUSIC and MATTERS). Tickets are on sale via GIGANTIC and CLWB.NET.

Join the Facebook event here!

We are working behind the scenes on some exciting shows at a venue I’ve been looking forward  to be working with for some time, but you’ll have to wait for that!

How can people get in touch with you?

We are on Facebook and Instagram, and you can email us with you EPK or any press releases on TracerBookingAgency@gmail.com. I always love discovering new bands, so if you’re noisy, shouty, or have good riffs, please send them over!

Kids In Glass Houses – “This 15 Smart Casual Live!” – Cardiff Students Union

“But I won’t admit defeat until Saturday, Saturday, Saturday…”

Review and photography by Chloe Jackson-Nott

Kids In Glass Houses, a Welsh five-piece rock band consisting of Aled Phillips, Andrew Sheehy, Iain Mahanty, Joel Fisher and Philip Jenkins. With their debut album Smart Casual turning 15 this year, they have reunited and are back on the road to bring nostalgia to the kids who have been fans since 2004.

The band announced their split back in 2014 where they played a final show on Halloween in Cardiff. On their current reunion tour, they have stopped off in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Bristol and finally wrapping up in Cardiff. It felt incredibly fitting to watch Kids In Glass Houses perform on a Saturday in their home city of Cardiff, with The Nightmares as their support act.

The Nightmares are a four-piece band who describe their music as Noir Pop. The Newport band consists of Adam Parslow, Eleanor Coburn, Benjamin Mainwaring and James Mattock. With the staging set up in dark red, the band played songs from their discography with black roses attached to their microphone stands. Their vibe gave a gothic atmosphere with a melancholy crimson feel.

Kids In Glass Houses came onto the stage with bundles of energy. Aled Phillips was running around the stage and showing no sign of stopping until their set was complete. They opened with Fisticuffs and finished with Matters At All. The the eccentric dance moves from Aled, it felt like he was channelling his inner Elvis. With a sea of inflatable flamingos in the crowd, and the chanting of A.L.E.D, the final show on the tour really did end with a bang. The band were incredibly thankful that so many fans were still supporting them and selling out shows and how 15 years since Smart Casual was released has flown by. The band finished off by taking a photo with the audience and included a sign that read ‘BRB…Making A New Album!’

Funeral For A Friend – ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ – Utilita Arena, Cardiff

Photography and words: Chloe Jackson-Nott

We’ll start a fire and burn some bridges and make it out of here tonight

Welsh band, Funeral For A Friend took to the stage at Utilita Arena, Cardiff on Saturday October 14th for their penultimate show of the ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ tour.

From Bridgend, formed in 2001, the band is made up of Matthew Davies-Kreye, Kris Coombs-Roberts, Gavin Burrough, Darran Smith, Richard Boucher and Ryan Richards.

During their Cardiff show, they were joined by American rock band Dashboard Confessional and Welsh rock band Dream State as supporting acts.

Opening the show, Dream State, fronted by Jessie Powell, gave the crowd a rock show entrance they will never forget. Performing their first arena show, Dream State were incredibly thankful to be part of Funeral For a Friend’s anniversary tour. Despite the size of the arena and crowd, Jessie held up her horns and threw herself into the audience, creating her own pit. This Welsh rock band was the perfect start to get this show on the road. Chin Up Princess is a song that will be on repeat for a while.

Dashboard Confessional were second on stage just before Funeral For A Friend themselves. The American rock band opened up with Don’t Wait and continued into songs such as Saints and Sailors and Screaming Infidelities. Bringing the crowd back down to a calm and collected level, Dashboard Confessional were able to maintain interaction with the audience with a special song request from a band member. Chris Carrabba told the crowd that each night on the tour they choose to play a random song from their discography.

Just over 2 hours after doors officially opened, the main show started, Funeral For A Friend were greeted by loud screams from their hometown Welsh fans. They opened with Rookie of the Year and continued into Bullet Theory. Lead singer Matthew Davies-Kreye was lucky enough to celebrate his birthday on home turf during their Cardiff show. Fans were jumping, pits were opened and the band’s 20th anniversary tour was celebrated in style at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff.

Celebrating Independent Venue Week with Rainbow Maniac – Q&A and album recording photo essay

So there’s nothing we like more on We Are Cardiff than supporting and celebrating local talent. So we dropped in to speak to good time rock and rollers Rainbow Maniac, who have just recorded their debut album, and will be playing on Tuesday 29 January at The Moon. Read on for a photo essay of the recording, and a Q&A!

And don’t forget to catch them Tuesday 29 January: Independent Venue Week – Rainbow Maniac / The Rotanas / Carolines / WYNT (all ages, The Moon).

So you guys have just recorded your album! Tell us all about it.

With Charlie Francis as our producer, we recorded most of it over two days cause we’re hipsters and we wanna be like the Beatles in the early days. It was pretty easy and relaxed because we’d thought about it for a while and we’re pretty well rehearsed.

Some of the songs have been around for two or three years, and some of the songs were finished in the last few months so it feels like we’re releasing a mini greatest hits album as our debut!

When is the album due to be released?

We want to find a label to release with first so a release date is very much TBC. We intend to put out some singles in the meantime though so don’t worry! We are going to promote our new single ‘Snowball’ and take it from there.

Can people see you live any time soon?

Yeah for sho. To promote ‘Snowball’ we booked a mini tour this month – you can catch us at the last show in Cardiff at the Moon, on the 29th January. The single is also being released on 29th so it should be a fun night getting boozy with our support acts Al Moses and Rotanas!

Many thanks to Aiyush Pachnanda of Yo SNAPS for the photos.

Sŵn Festival 2018 review

Sŵn Festival 2018: a return to form

After a couple of years in the wilderness, the crazy energy of the first Sŵns returned this year – with some new venues, and a slightly different format. And we had a great time! Our highlights included: cheeky cocktails in between shows at Blue Honey, gigs in a secret room out the back of Kongs (who knew Kongs was so big???), not getting into loads of gigs but just dancing in the street outside (sorry Estrons! We really wanted to see you, although we heard you caused structural damage to the venue?!), wonderful Gaz Coombes and wonderful Boy Azooga slotting in perfectly between Gaz and The Go! Team, a sweaty set from Hana 2K in the Moon, Al Moses, Griff Lynch, and Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard.

A return to the multi-venue, multi-day vibe all in Cardiff was brilliant. Vive la Sŵn!

We sent photojournalist Mehek Seth out into the madness, and here’s her photo essay.

Sŵn Festival 2018 – full line up announced!

With the news earlier this year than Sŵn Festival had changed hands, we were excited to hear about the line up announcement … and it’s finally here!

The final wave of Sŵn bands have been announced for this iconic Cardiff city festival, taking place Wednesday 17 – 20 October 2018. WHOOP!

Previous announcements already brought you Gaz Coombes, Boy Azooga, Drenge, Gwenno, 77:78 and Queen Zee – and now there are 30 more awesome acts …

Heavenly’s The Orielles will open Thursday’s mammoth gig at The Great Hall alongside grunge rock brothers Drenge and Melbourne’s tough surf pop outfit, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.

Jacob’s Market on Friday will be a massive night, with Cardiff homegrown Darkhouse Family curating a night of hypnotic, jazz and dance tunes with Bugz in the Attic performing live, alongside Esther and Andromeda Jones.

Cardiff-based Estrons are one of our favourites (they’ve just released their debut album You Say I’m Too Much , get yours now!) have a reputation for their bold, electrifying gigs, which means they’re certainly not one to miss this year – they’re playing on the Saturday. Joining them is Canadian artist Boniface, who unites 80s synth-pop with contemporary 21st century indie-pop to create a rare and electrifying performance.

Sŵn Festival takes place over four days (17-20 October) and 17 venues: Buffalo Bar, Clwb Ifor Bach, Fuel, Gwdihw Café Bar, Kongs, Nos Da, O’Neills, Off Track Café, The Big Top, The Blue Night Café, The Great Hall, The Moon, The Old Market Tavern, Tiny Rebel, Tramshed and Undertone.

Adam Williams, Live Manager at Clwb Ifor Bach (who are now managing the festival) said: “We’re over the moon to announce the final wave of artists for Swn Festival 2019. It’s been six months since we were asked to take on running and booking the festival and we’re super happy with what we’ve produced. Now all we have left is to deliver it!

“Sŵn Festival has been a vital part of the Cardiff music calendar for the last 12 years and it’s been really exciting for us at Clwb to build on that success – we hope we’ve created something special and that people continue to enjoy this festival for many more years to come.”

Wristbands for Sŵn are on sale now. For more information and to get your tickets, go to swnfest.com. Follow @swnissound on Twitter. or join the party with Sŵn on Facebook or Sŵn Instagram.

Meet Cardiff band, Rainbow Maniac

Earlier this year we were on the panel helping choose the bands for this year’s BBC Gorwelion/Horizons project. We plan to do a post about all the bands participating very soon, but there were a couple of BRILLIANT, stand-out Cardiff bands that didn’t make the final 12, that we want to profile for you.

First up, meet one of our new favourite bands, RAINBOW MANIAC!

As you can see, Rainbow Maniac are proper good times psychedelic rock’n’roll – plenty of energy and catchy tunes. What more could you ask of your new favourite band? Conor from the band was even kind enough to do a quick Q&A with us.

WE ARE CARDIFF. Please introduce the band!

RAINBOW MANIAC. Well, my name is Conor, I sing and write the songs. Louis plays the guitar, Gavin plays the drums and Laura plays bass.

We’re all from different South Walian valleys/towns, We all met in Bridgend College, only me and Gavin knew each other beforehand. That’s where the band formed, as we were the only four people in the class who weren’t into metal!

WAC. How did you end up in Cardiff?

RM. I studied a sound tech degree in Cardiff and then we all gradually found work and moved here.

WAC. Give us some local bands you’re into.

RM. Well obviously there’s The Socks, The Buzzards and The CVCs, but we’ve also got into some of the newer bands coming through like Al Moses, The Rotanas, The Pitchforks, and Carolines.

WAC. What’s your favourite Cardiff venue?

RM. Cardiff University Great Hall. We’ve seen a lot of our favourite bands there. I remember seeing Pete Doherty and Babyshambles gigs there before Rainbow Maniac were even a thing, and it had a big effect on me. We’d love to play there one day in the not-too-distant future.

WAC. What’s your favourite Cardiff boozer?

RM. It’s a difficult question because there are so many Wetherspoons to choose from, but would have to say The Gatekeeper, next to Moon Club. It’s a great place to get drunk before you go in to watch a band and are forced to pay over £3 for a can of Red Stripe. Until we get a call from Rough Trade, I will not be able to afford those prices.

WAC. What’s next for the band?

RM. We’re currently sat on a bunch of new recordings, so next we’re gonna shoot and direct our own music video with help from our friends at Mono. After that we’re just gonna work on the release, and try and cause as much of a stir in the music industry as possible, play some more shows, build some more friends, and fans. And have fun!

Our next show is at Tramlines Fringe Fest – Sheffield, 20 July. We also return to HUB Fest in Cardiff 25 August for what should be a great night.

Thanks Conor! Make sure you get along to see Rainbow Maniac at one of their upcoming shows and follow them in all the usual places …
